Answering the Call – the Roadmap

It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end. – Ernest Hemmingway

Each person is on a journey through life. At times the path intersects with people who inspire us or hinder us from reaching our full potential. Once we are sidetracked, it might seem nearly impossible to get back on track and fulfill our destiny. The Call acts outside of our own ambition. It never goes away and is always waiting to be completed. It lingers on in the back of our minds regardless of our success or failure in life. The Call is simply beyond the physical world that we live in.

Since this is a stretch for most people, allow me to explain what I mean. Most of us had a dream to be something as a child. For some it was a nurse, others a fireman and a few wanted to be pilots. There was a feeling of accomplishment when we would say to someone, “I’m going to be a such and such when I grow up.” We would declare our future and aspire to the greatness that came with the vocation. As with many things, somewhere along the timeline, we lost track or our compass started to point in a different direction away from that dream.

My mother has a saying that, “Life has a way of beating it out of us.” The Ã?¯Ã?¿Ã?½it’ she is referring to might be that dream. For many people it is and for others it is the fire that keeps them going, that keeps them moving forward. When I consider how many great career options I have had, I do wonder what might have been if I had pursued a different path. These dreams are not limited to careers; they touch all aspects of our lives. Since career choices are easy to identify, I’m using them as a prime example. Other dreams include where to live, whom to marry, how many children to raise, etc. I am living one of my dreams by being married to a wonderful, foreign woman and raising a precious baby girl with her. As a father, I can Ã?¯Ã?¿Ã?½see’ how much I need to teach my child about her dream and planning a roadmap to get to them.

When was the last time that you sat down and wrote out your goals, hopes, dream or ambitions? What could happen if you actually took the time to put down on paper the top ten acts that you desired to accomplish in life? Do you think that those ten acts might come true, if you pursued them to completion? Studies have shown that very few people ever bother writing about their future. The studies showed that only 1 out of 10 people put those thoughts on paper. That means that very few people will ever accomplish the acts that they deem worthwhile only because they put them down on paper.

That’s the idea with a Roadmap. It becomes a fun way of charting out where you are and where you want to go. Along the way, milestones and memories will be recorded in the process of getting to where you are going. The most incredible part is that the joy is in the journey, not in actually getting to your final Ã?¯Ã?¿Ã?½destination’. Oops, I’m a little ahead of myself here; I’m kind of giving away that secret ending to the series. It is sometime helpful to have a glimpse of the end while you are getting there just to keep you on track and give you encouragement to complete the campaign.
