Atheist Dating – Couples that Agree to Disagree

The whole concept of atheist dating doesn’t seem any less crazy to me than any other niche group of individuals who want to meet. On some levels it’s probably very convenient to date an atheist. You never have to worry about arguing about God, for example. And believe me I can’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve butted heads with old girlfriends regarding THAT topic.

So I decided to take the roll of an atheist single. Told my wife it was all in the name of “investigative journalism”. Was told in return if it went any farther than being “investigative” my ass was outta here. God, how I love that woman!

Well, quicker than you can mumble, “religious rhetoric” I found myself doing a Google search for Atheist Dating, while at the same time wondering how such a thing as “atheist dating” can exist in the first place? I’m not sure what sort of common ground two atheists share that could be the foundation of a relationship. But come to think of it, the fact that they don’t believe in anything is probably enough of a base to build a happy life together or at least a passion-filled weekend.

So I did some digging for a chat room or an atheist dating service. I was looking for somewhere I could meet atheist singles and found the following (and interesting) FAQ:
“âÂ?¦The XXXXX’s Match Maker was created to help people of like-minded views on religion and philosophy to meet one another. Specifically this site is for single atheists, agnostics, humanists and other nonreligious people. In today’s society, the vast majority of the population has religious beliefs. So it is sometimes difficult for people who have nonreligious philosophies to meetâÂ?¦”
Bingo! I’m in! I can meet atheist singles on this site! An open door to a whole lot of people who are not to keen on organized religion, and for all I know are convinced that Marilyn Monroe was waxed by the CIA!

So I logged on to one of this atheist dating site just to see who I was dealing with. A free virtual tour if you will. I didn’t for one second think that atheists look any different from any other type of person. It’s not like they have dark circles under their eyes or a scarlet letter burned onto their forehead or something.

Like all other singles services, if you want to meet atheist singles you need to register with a catchy phrase and you’re guaranteed more hits if you include your photo. On this site there were plenty of both. Photo’s of single atheist women with captions that read “Truth? There is no truth!” and “Long winding road to nowhere”. I’m not sure I want to meet an atheist if these are the type of bylines they go by. But then, I’m not an atheist. Maybe to an atheist this type of headline is very attractive! Other than that they all seem perfectly o-k. Because really, even if you’re an atheist you still have to eat. Right? You still go to movies. I’m pretty sure atheists like to have sex. If I found an atheist who can answer “yes” to those three questions, then right there I may have found a potential life-mate.

So I logged on as a guest on their forum, gave myself the catchy name of “The Big Picture?” then sat back and waited for some message traffic. I immediately met up with “non-believer”. And we pretty much got into an argument immediately based on her use of the word “believer” as part of her log-in name. I admit it was my fault:

“âÂ?¦You must believe in somethingâÂ?¦or BELIEVED in something in order to become a NON-believer!”

And from there we wrestled over religion, politics, love and sex for the next 30 minutes. And it got me to wondering – does this type of dynamic exist for every little thing? It just seems like at the core of an atheist’s soul there is an overwhelming doubt that makes these individuals question EVERYTHING.

At the end of the day, you have to look yourself in the mirror. And if the person looking back at you doesn’t believe in religion, or that Frank Sinatra was the epitome of cool, or anything other topic, then at least you can be proud of being true to your convictions.

I have since noticed that there are dozensnomake that hundreds of dating sites for atheists on the internet. I even ran across a site for atheists who want to date non-atheists!

Now THERE’S an interesting set-up.
