Atlanta’s Man-Made Beaches Bring Fun in the Sun

Sure, there are beaches in Georgia. Even better are the miles and miles of sandy expanses a little farther south in sunny Florida. But there is one thing that beach-goers can do without when deciding to brave the waves during the summer: Sharks. That being said, those living in the metro Atlanta area, wanting to get away for some sun and surf need look no further than the state lines.

The Beach at Clayton County International Park – Jonesboro, GA

If you head down I-75 to exit 228, you’ll run smack dab into the The Beach at Clayton County International Park. The beach, which is a man-made sandy stretch, leads to a spring-fed lake. The water amenities include an adventure kiddie pool, slides, and even a water trampoline. The beach and water activities are actually a park within a park-with the beach operating from Memorial Day until Labor Day every year. After August 7th, the beaches are only open on weekends. A rather inexpensive outing, the cost for adults (age13-54) into the beach area is just $9. Children 12 years of age and under cost only $7 for entry.

Sun Valley Beach – Powder Springs, GA

In the heart of Powder Springs, Georgia you’ll find another water-filled option for summer fun. Sun Valley Beach is probably metro Atlanta’s most well-hidden summer secret. One of the attraction’s biggest feats is in possessing the largest public swimming pool in the entire Southeast. The “ocean”, which is a crystal clear blue, is approximately 1.5 acres large, and is surrounded by one and a half miles of white, powdery beaches. Furthermore, the “beach” is situated amongst 40 acres of Georgia’s most stately pine trees and hardwoods.

No man-made beach is complete without a kiddie section. And Sun Valley Beach does not disappoint, with its gorilla swings, showering umbrella, and dolphin slides. Older (or more adventurous) children tend to opt for the log roll, eleven water slides and Tarzan ropes.
Season passes are priced around $60 per person. And unlike many public entertainment facilities, outside food may be brought into the area. However, no alcohol or glass containers are allowed on the premises.

Lake Lanier Islands Beach and Water Park – Buford, GA

A trip to the northern part of metro Atlanta, will find you in Buford, Georgia-home to Lake Lanier’s Islands, Beach, and Water Park. Branded one of the most extravagant entertainment facilities in Georgia, Lake Lanier has more than 11 water slides, and the largest wave pool in the state. The FunDunker is an attraction which possesses an additional one hundred different ways to have fun in the sun. The Water Park also features a kiddie lagoon, and other water attractions that are age-appropriate for smaller children.

What’s even more appealing about Lake Lanier’s water park is that there are so many different amenities nearby. For those seeking more of a “getaway” instead of a day outing, Lake Lanier’s Emerald Pointe Resort offers many luxurious overnight accommodations. There are also lakeside villas and houseboats available for rental. Truly, this is one way to create a faux tropical vacation right here in the metro area.

Red Top Mountain State Park – Cartersville, GA

Toward the northwestern part of the state, you’ll find yet another “beach” to relax the summer days away. Seated on 1,562 acres on the shores of Lake Allatoona, is the Red Top Mountain State Park. The beaches, open seasonally have more of a rural neighborhood aura than some of the other man-made facilities. Similar to Lake Lanier’s establishment, boats can be rented for a quick sail around the lake. Because of Red Top’s grittier set-up, and mountain-like accommodations, you can expect the visit to feel much more rugged. Lodging and meeting rooms are available. There is even a restaurant, and a long expanse of hiking trails for those who are a bit more physically adventurous. However, do not look for ritzy water slides and other kiddie attractions. The fun at Red Top’s man-made beach is very relaxing, but much more subdued.

Summertime getaways do not have to be terribly expensive. Just as a sweet tooth can be satisfied with one piece of candy instead of an entire cake-a “jonesing” for the beach can be gratified by a visit to one of Georgia’s man-made water attractions. Keep in mind that lodging options are available at some locations, and you can plan an entire vacation without having to book one plane ticket. Don’t have enough money for a cruise? Try scaling down your options with a boat rental. Many of these man-made beaches provide many tempting alternatives to traditional beach activities. Investigate some of these selections for your next summer vacation, and you just might not break the bank.
