Black & Decker Pivot Driver Not the Best Product

I’m not the handiest person around the house but I do have a variety of tools available to me for small repairs and assembly projects. One of those tools is the Black and Decker Pivot Driver; a 3.6 volt rechargeable screwdriver.

I received the Pivot Driver as a Christmas present and have found a few uses around the house for it. But, each time I use it, I have found myself disliking the screwdriver more and more.

In theory, the Pivot Driver should be a good tool and, I have found the 3-position handle handy when I’ve had to work on a project that gave me a limited amount of space to maneuver. Overall though, I think I can find a better product out there on the market.

I have two major problems with the Pivot Driver. The first is torque. If I’m putting a screw in a pre-made hole, it does just fine. But, if I’m attempting to mount something to my wall and there isn’t a hole already there, the screwdriver struggles to even make a dent. I normally have to make a hole with a nail before hand just to give it a chance.

I’m also not very impressed with the battery life of the screw driver. If the job only lasts a minute or two, it’s fine. But, if I need to use the Pivot Driver for an extended period of time, the battery seems to lose its charge a bit too fast and I end up having to finish with another screwdriver.

My biggest pet peeve about the Black and Decker Pivot Driver is the fact it doesn’t have a magnetic tip. Again, this isn’t a big deal if I’m assembling something that has a pre-made screw hole already but it is a big inconvenience with pretty much anything else. For example, a couple of months ago, I was mounting a can crusher to my wall and was using the Pivot Driver to help me. A project that should have taken a few minutes took me more than an hour because the screws would not stay on the tip of the driver and I had to constantly pick them up. I finally had to get a regular screwdriver out, start the screws in the wall by hand and then use the pivot driver. Considering I was holding the can crusher in place at the time, this wasn’t an easy thing to do.

If you’re looking for a rechargeable screwdriver that is easy to handle and will be used solely for small projects around your house, the Pivot Driver is one you should consider. But, if you’re looking for something that will be reliable and easy to use regardless of how big the project is, your best bet is to look at a different product.
