Building a Reputation as an Expert Freelancer

Everyone knows that in order to be a successful freelancer, no matter your field, it is necessary to have a reputation. If you want the jobs, and if you want to show clients that you know what you are doing, you need to establish yourself as an expert in your field. Here are some ways that you can establish a reputation and enjoy the benefits of a clientele that knows just who to come to.

1.Publish. E-books, articles, reports, and newsletters are all ways for you to get the word out and showcase your knowledge in a specific field or specialty. Look for e-zine publishers who need someone to write well-informed articles. You may not get paid much, but you will be “out there.” You can also create e-books and bypass publishers. Offer them for free and people will soon see that you are indeed an expert that would do a good job on any number of projects. Newsletters should be sent to customers, and filled with interesting and authoritative information. You will keep your name top of mind for customers and prospects, and it will be further proof of your credibility.

2.Build a home on the Web. A Web site can help potential clients more easily find you. The site should be attractive, easy to use, informative, and timely. You want people to continue to visit the site. Additionally, include links to articles you have on other sites, and archive particular useful tidbits published on your site. A blog on your site can also be a great tool. If you live near a college with Web design program, you can usually get a discount on services from students who want to build a portfolio. Additionally, there are many inexpensive and free templates out there that make it possible for you to create your own site.

3.Network. This can be done by joining associations. Be an active member of a local chapter of a professional organization. You’ll meet people who can introduce you to others. Your reputation will increase, and the people you meet won’t hesitate to recommend you for projects. Another way to network is to attend conferences and seminars where other professionals will be meeting and learning. Not only will you make valuable acquaintances, but you will also learn tips to help you with your own business. Speak at public events. Offer to speak to a local writers’ club or to a business group. Make sure you give a well prepared presentation and that you are able to answer questions.

4.Use the press. You can write a press release for good PR. But make sure that you have something that it newsworthy, and that you write it in a “newsy” style. You want to help the editors use your information, not turn them off because you seem like an ad. However, it doesn’t hurt to take out a simple ad in the newspaper to help you get your name out there. But keep the hype to a minimum, and give an idea of what you offer and your will have better credibility.
