Getting a Guard Dog

Protecting your home and living in safety is an important issue on everyone’s mind. It seems that crime rises each year, and this includes the numbers of residential and business burglaries. Of course, you can find any number of home security and surveillance systems on the market, including security cameras, burglar alarms, motion detectors, and a host of other security devices.

While these can all add a great deal of protection to your home, having a guard dog may be your best solution. Guard dogs have been used in protecting property for hundreds of years now, mostly because they are excellent in doing their jobs.

There is nothing, short of having a gun drawn on you that puts fear in your heart than an encounter with a vicious guard dog. As a thief, this is the last thing you want to see. Many of these trained guard dogs can cause serious injury to a would be burglar, and even death in some cases. These dogs will do whatever it takes to protect their owner’s property.

Getting a guard dog of your own comes with some added responsibilities on your part.

-You and or your family will need to remember to keep food and fresh water out at all times This may sound trivial, but with today’s busy lifestyles it can be more difficult than it seems.

-You’ll need to let the dog outside during the day so they can relieve themselves. Do you have a chain link fence? If not, your dog will need to be tied up.

-You will need to expose your guard dog to all those who come inside your home, such as family members, relatives, friends, neighbors, etc. The last thing you want is for your new guard dog to take a bite out of your Aunt Mary.

Another question you’ll need to answer is where your dog will stay. Will the dog be an outside guard dog? Or will it be an inside protector? Most are kept outside in a fenced area, although some are indoor guard dogs. Having your dog inside means that if a thief or burglar does attempt to come in through any area of your home, your dog is there to great them. This is not what the burglar wants to hear or see, and they will make a hasty retreat if possible.

You have many options when it comes to finding the breed of dog you want, as well as where to buy it. You can go with a Doberman, German Shepard, Rottweiller, or even a Pit Bull. Dobermans make excellent guard dogs. One look at a Doberman and anyone will take off running.

You may be able to find a dog that has been specifically trained for protecting the home. This makes your job easy because the dog is already trained to defend it’s property.

When looking to buy a guard dog, thoroughly check out the place you’re thinking of buying from. Be sure they are reputable and have a good track record. Also, make certain the dog is in good health and has but to date immunizations.

Getting a guard dog to protect your home is a great idea if you take your time and make the right choice.
