Help Your Pet Get Rid of Diarrhea

Diarrhea is not fun for anyone, including your pet. Many times your pet has eaten something rotten or has eaten too much human food causing the runs. And although diarrhea helps clean the system out it’s no fun for you cleaning it up. Here are a few things you can do to help your pet get over their diarrhea. One of the best things to do to help get rid of your pet’s diarrhea is to put them on a fast for a day. Not feeding your pet for 24 hours will help clean your pet’s system and allow their digestive system a rest and time to flush out everything. Giving them food while they have diarrhea doesn’t allow their stomach time to recoup and could make the diarrhea last longer. If your pet still suffers from diarrhea after one day of fasting then something more serious could be wrong and you should take them to the vet.

When you pet is ready to eat again feed them small portions that are easy to digest. Try giving them rice, pasta, or mashed potatoes with skinless meat every four hours for two days. After two days you can switch them back to their regular diet but continue to alternate between the two diets. Another way to help get rid of your pet’s diarrhea is to give them some fiber, if their stools are soft then they need fiber to firm their waste. Fiber helps release water out of the stool and ferments the colon. Give your pet 1 Ã?¼ teaspoon and 1 tablespoon of Metamucil a day for one or two days. Mix it and pour it on the food.

Give your pet plenty of water since diarrhea depletes body fluids. To prevent dehydration make sure your pet is drinking enough water. Don’t give your pet milk, many dogs and cats are unable to digest the milk due to a lack of the lactase enzyme in their systems. To get rid of your pet’s diarrhea, you can also take them walking. Walking stimulates the central nervous system but make sure your pet has the energy and is drinking enough water. Stop feeding your pet human food or canned food, dry food can provide the fiber and substance needed to help get rid of that awful diarrhea.

Diarrhea is a normal occurrence when your pet has eaten too much or ate something not particular fresh. However, it can also indicate something is wrong like worms, diabetes, or distemper. If your pet has diarrhea for more than one complete day, or if they are vomiting, take them to the vet immediately. Following these tips will help get rid of your pet’s diarrhea and get them back into the swing of things.
