How to Build a Bicycle Camera Mount

Bicycle camera mounts are small devices that allow you to hook your camera up to your bicycle. There are many different reasons people do this, the most common of which is to get a cool perspective in your footage. If you’re a mountain biker or off-roader, the video can be quite interesting, and when put to the right music, downright artful.

If you want to make a camera mount for your bicycle follow the simple steps below. The total project cost is very minimal and the construction process only takes a few minutes with the right tools You’ll only need a basic knowledge of construction – this project does involve some drilling, so if you’re younger, ask a parent for help.

Items Needed:

Two hose clamps
1/4″ – 20 screw
1/4″ – 20 wing nut
T-shaped PVC elbow 1″ in diameter
1 PVC end cap
Hack saw
Drill with 1/4″ drill bit

Step 1: Using the hack saw, cut the bottom half of the straight part off (the top of the T).

Step 2: Place the PVC cap on the circular part of the PVC unit. It is doesn’t fit snuggly, glue it on with hot glue or PVC epoxy. Let it dry.

Step 3: Using the drill bit, drill a hole down through the center of the cap you just placed on the unit.

Step 4: Slip the screw through the bottom (open) side of the unit and out the top of the cap. Screw the wing nut on it until it is held snuggly in place.

Step 5: Place the bottom of the PVC unit over the top of your handlebars. Secure it in place with a hose clamp on each side. Screw it on tightly.

Step 6: Screw your camera or camcorder onto the screw of the tripod mount. Make sure that it is sturdy . If the camera is heavy enough to make the mount tip over, tighten the hose clamps. If it still rotates, remove the unit and wrap thin rubber around your handlebars first, then place the unit around it. Tighten it enough that it cuts into the rubber. It shouldn’t tip over now.

Note: This is not a steadycam version, it is a simple mount. If you go over hard terrain or a rough area the picture will be bouncy. To reduce this slightly, use an end cap on the unit made of softer plastic that has a slight give to it. This will cut down on the little vibrations.
