How to Build a Model Volcano

Do you know how to build a model volcano? Well, let me show you how to build. As you all know, volcanoes exist in many parts of the world. Most are not active. When a volcano is active, a white clouds of steam and ash rise into the sky. It’s red-hot liquid rock, called lava will flows out too. You can build a model volcano with vinegar and baking soda. Make believe lava will pour out its top even through there is no fire. You can build a realistic volcanic cone out of a clay. Now, let’s start making a volcano.

The materials are measuring cup, jar, baking soda, vinegar, detergent, food coloring, water, clay and lastly, the twigs for decorations. Firstly, build a model volcano out of clay. If you don’t want to use clay, you can just pile up mud or dirt to make it look like a real volcano. But, be sure to leave room at the top for the jar to fit in. When your model is ready, put three or four small spoonfuls of baking soda in the jar. Then, mix together one half cup of water, one fourth of a cup of detergent, a fourth of a cup of vinegar and some red food coloring. Lastly, pour the mixture into the jar. Smoke and the lava you have made will start pouring out the way they come from a real volcano.

Besides that, you can also try the underwater volcano. Volcanoes sometimes erupt in the ocean. Here’s how to make a simple underwater volcano. You will only need a large glass jar, a small bottle, string and red food coloring. First, you will need to fill the jar with cold water. Then, you fill the small bottle with hot water. Tie a string around it and add some red food coloring. Lastly, holding one end of the string, you lower the small bottle carefully into the glass jar and watch as “lava” rises from the small bottle.

There, you have just made a mini underwater volcano. However, for parents attention, mixing baking soda and vinegar produces the gas carbon dioxide. The reaction is very quick and produces many tiny bubbles. It is the same kind of reaction that creates the air pockets found in certain breads that are made without yeast. Adding red food coloring to baking soda and vinegar creates an effect like red volcanic magma, and the addition of dry ice produces the effect of a cloud of steam. Adding detergent increases the bubbles. Be sure to check the label because some detergents may produce toxic gases when mixed with other substances.
