How to Keep a Healthy Fish Tank

If you are a parent, your children have probably asked for a fish tank at one time or another. A fish tank is a great way to teach responsibility, and will not take too much effort from either you or your children. By following the tips below you will be able to keep your fish healthy, while also teaching your children a good lesson in responsibility.

1. Place your tank against an inside wall that is not going to be exposed to sudden environmental changes. Some people make the mistake of placing their tank next to a window, and they have a difficult time regulating the temperature due to sudden drafts and periods of sun.

2. It is important to maintain healthy water. This is the number one thing to remember when keeping a fish tank. You need to monitor the chemicals in your tank at least once a week. You can purchase a water testing kit at any pet store. Teaching your children to perform this job will make them feel involved in the overall well being of the fish.

3. Only feed your fish the recommended food. Fish food can be purchased at any pet store. Make sure you know what kind of fish you have, and what they should eat. Again, children love to fish, so teach them the proper technique and let them learn.

4. Be sure to remove unwanted waste from the water. This may include uneaten food, or anything else that may make its way into the water. By doing this, you will ensure that the water quality in your tank stays at an acceptable level.

5. Only buy fish that are compatible with each other. Before adding new fish make sure that they will be able to co-exist with the ones that you already have.

6. If you buy healthy fish to start, you will be getting off on the right foot. Only purchase fish that seem lively, and in overall good health.

By following these tips, you and your children will be able to have a joyful and educational experience with your new fish tank.
