Modern Kitchen Cabinets: Adding a Whole New Look to an Existing Kitchen

We finally decided the time was right to do a kitchen remodel. We had done quite a bit of research, and had gone through a good many magazines. Kitchen cabinets are one of the main focal points of the kitchen, and we were being quite picky. My husband finally said, “It’s up to you. Get what you want.” That’s all I needed. I took it, and ran with it.

I knew exactly what I wanted. I wanted kitchen cabinets that did not have sharp, definite edges. I also wanted the corner cabinets to be rounded. I guess kind of kidney shaped. What I did not want was a definite 90-degree corner. I also did not want the Art Deco-bright color look.

I wanted the aesthetic look of white, and I would accent with color. It made a lot of sense to me. I liked the idea of having acrylic on the cabinets; it would make it so easy to keep them clean. Not at all like my old wood cabinets that I had to clean and oil to keep nice looking. Whenever I wanted to change the look and feel of the kitchen; I didn’t have to change the cabinets, I would just change the accessories and colors.

During most of our remodeling ventures the stores we usually used was Lowe’s and Home Depot. If one store didn’t have what we wanted, the other store did; and they are both excellent stores for any remodeling project. This time, though they had a nice selection of kitchen cabinets that I liked; they weren’t exactly what I wanted.

We checked out alot of different companies on the internet, but it was really hard for us to see exactly what they would actually look like once they were put in. I was starting to get frustrated.

A friend of ours told us that we should try the new ‘Ikea’ store that had just opened about 30 miles from our home. We did, and it was the best thing we could have done. Their products were set up in show-rooms which showed us exactly what the cabinets would look like installed. They also had personnel available to help with measurements, and figuring out prices. That, to me, was the hard part.

We already had a basic layout of what we wanted and where. The salesperson was invaluable in helping us. In the under-the-counter cabinet where I was going to put my pots-n-pans, he showed us a cabinet that would pull out. I love it. It makes it so much easier not having to bend over, and reach and pull.

I learned, that if you want to add a touch of Europe to your kitchen, this is the place to go.

The truly hard thing about shopping at Ikea for my kitchen cabinets was picking out the set I wanted. They had so many rooms to choose from, and they were all just what I wanted. If I had wanted my cabinets in a color; they had that too.

Shopping for kitchen cabinets for our home was truly an adventure, and we had a lot of fun. It was some much needed together-time, and those at Ikea made it very pleasant.
