My Mother’s Pot

Trinkets scattered across a bedroom dresser
Like spilled rice on a cold kitchen floor

Both treasure and grain hail from that land of
Dripping mango trees and stucco cathedrals
Neither one quite settled here in Washington
With its pastel cherry blossoms and guns
