Opie & Anthony at it Again!

Fired from CBS Radio in August 2002, Opie & Anthony have again come under firesort offor a recent on air stunt.

Their syndicated radio show airs in New York, Philadelphia, Boston and other markets. Listeners who tuned in yesterday at 7 a.m. heard a caller on Opie & Anthony’s show say he was “going outside to kill a tree”. What was heard next was the sound of five gunshots.

One of the many who heard this on the airwaves was Gary Reina Jr., whose father lives nearby the shooting. Reina Jr. called his father, who had heard the actual firing shots, and in turn, the father called the police. Thomas Young was arrested around 10 a.m. for shooting five times into the woods near his Melville, NY home. Young admitted to firing the rifle, and did so into the woods to avoid injury to anyone. He found out the hard way that town law doesn’t allow shooting in unauthorized areas. Suffolk County Police confiscated the weapon. Young was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor, discharging a firearm in a prohibited area.

Though not directly involved this time, it isn’t the first radio scandal that has crept up on the Opie & Anthony show. Four years ago, the duo was dropped by 102.7 FM / WNEW, a station owned by CBS Radio. This was a result of airing a live play by play given by a frequent guest of the show, who described the actions of a Virginia couple having sex in New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Gregg “Opie” Hughes and Anthony Cumia then moved to XM satellite radio, and eventually landed back to terrestrial, on 92.3 Free FM.
