Outdoor Mod Podge: A Crafter’s Must-Have Supply

Through the years of crafting there are a few craft products that I have learned I simply cannot live without. Outdoor Mod Podge is one such product. Mod Podge, the classic decoupage medium that works as both glue and glaze when creating projects, was once one of my “can’t live without” crafting supplies. Recently, Outdoor Mod Podge has taken over. Outdoor Mod Podge is a wonderful product that no crafter should be without!

Outdoor Mod Podge is similar to classic Mod Podge in texture and use. This waterbased sealer works as both a glue and a finish on products. You can do decoupage projects such as attaching tissue paper to a planter for instance, and instead of needing both glue to apply the tissue paper and some sort of finish to go over the tissue paper, Mod Podge does the job of both in one product. Outdoor Mod Podge does the same thing except for one specific difference: Outdoor Mod Podge is watertight.

Non-toxic Outdoor Mod Podge can be used for a variety of projects that might be placed outdoors, or for other projects that just might get wet. Coasters, for instance, are a perfect example. Creating decoupaged coasters using ceramic tiles is a great project that can be done using Outdoor Mod Podge. Covering inexpensive plastic planters for outdoor use, personalizing bird feeders, and even decoupaging your mailbox can all be done using Outdoor Mod Podge.

To use Outdoor Mod Podge simply apply a basecoat for your decoration to adhere to. After the decoration is applied, add a coat of Outdoor Mod Podge over the decoration. Smooth out any air bubbles. Allow this coat to try for 15 minutes then apply another coat of Outdoor Mod Podge. Several thin coats of Outdoor Mod Podge should be applied to really make the item outdoor safe. After all of your coats are applied, allow your Outdoor Mod Podge to dry for at least 72 hours before using and before sending the item outside. Do know that because of the amount of coats of Outdoor Mod Podge that will have to be applied to your project, you will not be left with a completely glassy smooth finish. The Outdoor Mod Podge finish with have a more textured look to it.

Look for outdoor ModPodge in such crafting stores as Hobby Lobby and Michaels. While finding Outdoor Mod Podge isn’t always easy, it is certainly worth the search. Outdoor Mod Podge is typically found with adhesives and comes in a green bottle, similar to the original Mod Podge bottle. Expect to pay around $4.29 for an 8 fluid ounce bottle of Outdoor Mod Podge.
