Redecorate With Linoleum

Linoleum is not just for floors anymore. When it comes to redecorating vinyl floor covering can replace many of the materials you would normally purchase. Linoleum is available now in so many colors and designs that it’s perfect for many rooms of the house.

The most fabulous thing about linoleum is that it’s so easy to care for and to install. One unique look for a bathroom is to completely cover the floors and walls with linoleum. Choose a pattern that looks like tile or choose another design. Vinyl is easy to cut with an ordinary pair of scissors or a box cutter making it ideal for even those with no linoleum-laying experience. And, it can be installed over the top of just about any previous wall covering. Stucco, and similar wall coverings, will have to be sanded first but linoleum can be put over the top of most paneling or existing wallpaper.

Putting linoleum on the walls of the bathroom make it look clean and beautiful. It’s so easy to care for that the only requirement is to simply wipe it down on occasion. It’s a unique look that will cover old, ugly walls for a small price. Remove any molding and fixtures, such as towel racks. Make sure there are no nails, screws or other things that could damage the linoleum. Fill paneling grooves with caulking before covering it with vinyl.

Cut the vinyl linoleum as if you were cutting fabric. Measure the height of the wall, the width of the wall and mark, on the backside of the vinyl, places that will need allowance, such as electrical outlets. Cut the vinyl piece. Use a “liquid nail”-type adhesive for the linoleum. Put it around the perimeter of the section you’re doing then make sort of a checkerboard pattern within the perimeter. This will hold the vinyl immediately upon placing it on the wall. Use a clean paint roller to smooth the vinyl.

After the linoleum has been installed replace the molding to hide the linoleum edges. It’s important that you calk around the edges of the linoleum when it is placed around tub, sink and shower. The linoleum is not suited for inside the shower but can be installed around it.

Linoleum works well as covering for a counter top, too. It’ll have to be well-caulked for use in bathrooms or around a kitchen sink. When using linoleum for kitchen counter tops use pot holders rather than placing hot pans directly on the linoleum.
