Silent Movie Era Chalkboard Banner

What you’ll need:
Large card stock circles
Black chalkboard paper
String or twine
Tape
White paint pen

One of my most favorite parties that I ever threw had a theme of the silent movie era. We had a black and white table runner, black dishes with white napkins, and cute napkin rings featuring captions from the silent movie era. There are a lot of fun crafts that can be made for a black and white film theme including a wall banner. Hang it over the food table and it looks charming. Write captions on the banner and you instantly create a look that is reminiscent of the silent movie era.

A silent movie caption banner is actually very easy to create when you have a few inexpensive craft supplies. Start out with large card stock circles, turn them into little chalkboards, and the banner will be finished. To begin, decide on how many card stock circles that you’ll need to make a banner of the size that you want. In addition to the card stock circles you’ll need string or fishing twine.

Lay the string out on a flat surface, weight down the ends (if needed), and leave it there for now. Take the first card stock circle and make it into a small chalkboard by using a piece of chalkboard paper. You can find it in many different online stores, sold by the roll, or by the piece. Cut one chalkboard circle to be the exact same size as the card stock circle. Peel the backing off of the paper and stick the black circle to the card stock circle.

A piece of tape on the backside is all that you need to secure the string that holds the banner. With the string lying flat, position the chalkboard circle on it, and tape the string to the back. Make the next chalkboard circle, tape it to the string, and so on, until the banner is as long as you want it to be.

You’ll make the black circle banner look like it fits right in with a silent movie era theme when you write words, phrases, and/or sentences, which are captions from silent movies. Make up your own, using the language of the day, or look at captions online. Instead of writing them with chalk, as is normally done on chalkboard paper, write the captions with a white paint pen.

It’s so excited to have a silent movie night or silent movie party, especially when you get to make the decorations yourself. After all, that’s a whole lot of the fun!
