The Fear of Being Evaluated:Testophobia

Testophobia is the fear of being tested. Being tested or evaluated is exactly the situation one encounters when going on a job interview. When going on a job interview apprehension is a normal feeling but for those suffering with Testophobia this feeling is escalated almost to the point of paralysis. Because of this nervous state of mind, a well-qualified candidate may be viewed as unqualified for the position therefore is repeatedly turned down time after time for a job.

Today, the heats has and is constantly being turned up, due to downsizing an increased amount of people are vying for the available jobs. Therefore, a measure of nervousness is common job seekers. Some symptoms that may be exhibited are:

  • Excessive sweating before an interview
  • Stammering over words regularly used
  • Lack of confidence in self
  • Hard to concentrate on questions being asked

For some it becomes important to reprogram their thinking each time they are going to me evaluated such as in the case of going on a job interview. It may be important to tell yourself over and over that you not intend to but WILL deliver. Tell yourself that if you do not get the job that it is not an assault against you personally, programming you mind before you go on the interview that the interviewer is not out to get you will dispel the thought when it comes up. Before going on the interview visualize the whole process in your mind and pull from that as you are being interviewed.

Ways to calm your fears of being evaluated during a job interview

  • Before going on an interview learn as much as you can about that company
  • Before the interview establish a cue to refocus your thought pattern when stuck such as ‘no problem’
  • Prepare ahead of time to explain with conviction why you are the best person for the job and convey with confidence
  • Practice the whole interview at home with a partner, simulating getting through the rough parts. This will prepare you mentally to deal with the unexpected
  • Rest and a good diet is essential
  • Wear an outfit that makes you feel on top of the world anytime it is worn, just make sure it is job interview appropriate

These are just a few suggestions of how to cope with having Testophobia, all of which has one common thread to consider, PREPARATION.
