The North Dallas Design District

At the beginning of each new year, one becomes a little obsessed with self-improvement. The list of resolutions tends to grows with pledges to get fit, healthy, and fabulous. It’s tough to stay the course, however, without a conducive environment. This year, take as much care getting your home in shape as you do your personal makeover. Choosing new home fashions can be a pleasure (not a chore) when you take advantage of great local resources.

The North Dallas Design District provides the best concentration of home furnishings in the Metroplex. Bringing together 22 stores, the district encompasses over one million square feet of showrooms. Freed’s Homefurnishings alone is the size of two football fields!

Though “bigger is better” in Dallas, here are a few more reasons why the district is the place to go for your design needs:

Variety.
Merchants range from one-stop shopping to specialty retailers, couture to incredibly affordable furniture, custom-made pieces to those you can take home right off the floor, and every style – ultra-modern, contemporary, transitional, and traditional – is on display.
Freedom Furniture even coordinates greenery, flooring, paint, paneling, pool, and patio. Southwest Galleries carries fine art for the neophyte collector to the connoisseur.

European influence.
Visit all of the hot contemporary European design showrooms within a couple of blocks: Danish Inspirations, Cantoni, Eurway Innovative Affordable Furniture, and Roche Bobois.

Access to the latest trends.
The American Institute of Architect’s Trend Survey reports that media rooms and home offices are the most popular new rooms. Due to rising fuel costs, flexible work arrangements, and better technology, more Dallasites are telecommuting, as well as staying home for movie nights.

Charter Furniture Galleries, for example, specializes in home and executive offices, entertainment, and leather pieces by great makers like Pennsylvania House Gallery. Reclining leather cinema-style seats are all the rage. Jaime Knott at The Leather Sofa Company confirms the trend, “Home theater seating is big, and leather just holds up better. We use only Italian leathers and don’t cut any corners.”

The Roomstore’s Chris Moncrief notes that with hardwood floors in 70% of new homes, area rugs are also a big seller. From super-soft braided chenille to hand-knotted Indian styles, Capel Rugs carries an extensive collection of in-stock rugs, and The Rug Gallery also houses a wide variety of modern and antique items.

Fabulous furniture and accessories you can’t find anywhere else.
If can picture the perfect sofa, but just can’t seem to spot it, several North Dallas Design District stores can help you design what you have in mind. Erin McAnally says, “Short of going to a custom builder and asking for a 10’x10′ purple polka dot table, customers at Bassett Furniture Direct can really create their furniture. They can choose fabric, color, three levels of size, arms, feet, back, skirt, or finish and hardware for case goods.”

A representative of The Luxury of Leather share that some customers “even go to the factory to pick the skins and see their pieces being made. They choose the cushions, legs, and from 100 colors of skins.”

Stone Creek is the group’s custom builder, manufacturing build-to-order home theatres, offices, and free-standing furniture. You’ll get a great preview of your finished piece, because Tim Kennedy says, “We can show the customer the concepts on computer and render in color 3-D.”

Convenience.
Located in North Dallas, it’s an easy drive from anywhere in DFW. Conserve on gas and time finding parking by visiting one area for all of your home desires.
