Tips for Driving in the Rain

Driving in the rain can be downright intimidating at times. It takes a lot more skill then driving under normal conditions. And if you are not safe, you may end up putting yourself as well as other drivers around you in danger. But that does not mean that you should stay at home every time there is rain in the forecast. You should simply take a few precautions in order to ensure safe travel.

If you are expecting rain, you want to make sure that your windshield wipers are in good working order. Wipers can go bad over time, and eventually be rendered useless. Keep in eye on their condition even when it is not raining. This way you will be prepared for anything.

Also, you want to make sure that your headlights are working. The moment that it starts raining you should turn your lights on along with your windshield wipers. If you have a burnt out headlight it is important to replace it right away. Not only is it a safety hazard, it is also illegal to drive with one headlight.

After making sure that everything checks out on your car, you still need to be safe while driving. If it is raining hard you should greatly reduce your speed.

Your reaction time will not be as quick in the rain, and fast stops can lead to slippage and/or hydroplaning. And always remember that there is nothing wrong with pulling over if you begin to feel threatened by the conditions. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Just because it is raining it does not mean that you should hide in your house. But you do need to exercise a high level of caution in order to stay safe.
