Treatments for ADHD

ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactive disorder, is a condition that many young children are diagnosed with that plagues them for much of their adult life as well. If you or your children struggle with ADHD, there are several treatment options available; you should talk to your physician about which options would be best for your family in order to be as happy and healthy as possible.

There are a few medications that can be taken for ADHD, including Ritalin, a drug that is used as a sedative to calm children who are struggling with ADHD. There is much debate about the regular use of Ritalin for children, however; many people believe that regular dosages of the drug can cause dependency, and that drug can even alter a child’s personality by causing depression and mood swings. Concerta, another medication used to treat ADHD, can last up to 12 hours so that a child only has to take one pill a day, but the side effects are similar to that of Ritalin. Advantages to giving children with ADHD medications include better concentration at school, improved social skills, and advancement in motor skills. All of these things are needed in order for children to excel in school, which is why these medications are still considered good methods for ADHD treatment.

Many people also opt to use alternative treatments for ADHD, in order to reduce the dependency on medication. Certain alternative treatments, such as neurotherapy and ephedrine have been used to treat ADHD, but these methods, along with most herbal remedies, are not approved by the FDA, so using them could pose a risk for your or your child. However, many people have reported success and positive results by using alternative treatments, so this may be a good way to wean your child from traditional medications.

Changing your child’s diet has also proven to be an effective ADHD treatment. By giving your child foods that are low in sugar and preservatives, you can decrease hyperactivity. Foods with an excessive amount of additives and dyes can also be harmful for children with ADHD, since they can increase hyperactivity and anxiety in children. Scientists are also finding that gluten, the protein found in wheat and most other edible grains can reduce the symptoms of ADHD in children, as well as in children with autism. By preparing gluten-free meals for your children, you can monitor the behavior and activity of your child while on the diet to see if he or she is calmer, less anxious, and is able to concentrate better in school.

For more information on treatments for ADHD and how you and your family can find the best treatment, be sure to talk to your physician in detail once you find out that you or your child has been diagnosed with ADHD. Remember that every treatment on the market is not for everyone, and that your lifestyle habits and the severity of the ADHD can determine which treatments will be most effective.
