Why You Really Need to Power Wash Your Home Before You Paint It

Before you paint the exterior of you house you really should power wash your house. You see this as an unnecessary step of the long process of painting the exterior of your home. However, it can actually save you from having to re-paint your home later on.

Why is it Important to Power Wash my House?

Power washing your home does two very important tasks:

1. It removes any dirt or other particulate matter on your home. This is the most important reason because a clean surface will allow your new paint to adhere to your home better. This will create a better bond between the house and paint making the paint last longer and make it more resistant to rain and heat.

2. You also will become more familiar with the layout of your home and it gives you experience on a ladder. The more time you spend on a ladder the faster you will get on it and more comfortable you will be.

But it can be Expensive!

Yes power washers are not cheap. You don’t need a real powerful power washer unless you plan on painting multiple houses. You also probably don’t need to buy one unless you have multiple houses to wash.

The expense seems like a lot to just wash your home but think about the time and money you save in the long run if washing your house makes your paint last just 2 years more? That could mean the difference between painting your house yet again to sell it and letting the new homeowner paint it.

Why do I need to Power Wash my House when I can just Spray it with my Garden Hose?

You really don’t get the same kind of force from just spraying water on your house. It will get off the loose bits of dirt and any other loose stuff. You won’t however, be able to take off the dirt that has been cemented in old paint from years of harsh weather.

Believe it or not your home can get real dirty over time. People try to spray down there home and it usually looks the same. They then have a professional come through and power wash there house before they paint it and the house really does look cleaner.

This is especially true if you live in an area with lots of loose pollen because the pollen will stick to your home. When you power wash your house you will see the water turn yellow almost. This is all of the pollen be washed away.

If the pollen is not taken off before you paint over it your new coat of paint will start to peel much quicker because of the pollen. The pollen will slowly dissolve and will leave cracks under the paint where just a little water will start to cause your paint to peel.
