Wood Carving Tools

Every wood carving enthusiast will tell you that there are certain tools that they prefer to use. Wood carving can be a hobby or a profession, but either way the tools you use must be the right ones to get your project done.

Wood carving tools include various kinds of knives, chisels and gouges. When wood carving, you will need to use many different shaped and sized knives. One of these is a carving knife. This one is used to cut and then smooth the wood. It removes bits just like paring a piece of fruit. There are tools called gouges. They are used in wood carving to make curves and dig out a hollow in the piece that is being worked on. In a wood carving set of tools you will find straight gouges, front bent gouges and back bent gouges. The set of tools for wood carving will also have chisels to make lines and neaten up the exterior parts that are flat. Again, a wood caring set of tools will have a variety of lengths and widths of chisels.

When wood carving, you will have occasions that require adding detail as well as making the corners sharper. These will be done with V gouges or V chisels. They are a separate category of tools because of their shape. You may also find on the wood carvers table a dog leg chisel, a stab knife, and a chip stab knife

There are also power tools that can be used for wood carving. Electric sanders to smooth the piece being worked on are on example. Wood carving also requires mallets for shaping. Although when first starting out, someone learning wood carving will likely have a small collection of useful tools to use. It’s only over time that they will accumulate their favorites and learn what works best for them when working on a wood carving project.
