Diet Plan for Coronary Heart Disease

Coronary heart disease is caused by narrowing of the arteries and vessels which are responsible for providing oxygen and nutrients to the heart. The disease has become the leading cause for deaths worldwide and has made people conscious about the state of their heart.

The reason for this narrowing is due to the deposition of fat particles on the walls and this may lead to a heart failure in the extreme cases. Understand the Lipoproteins:

    Low Density Lipoproteins:

LDPs are bad form of cholesterol. Coronary heart disease has a strong relationship with the amount of cholesterol you consume. Cholesterol is found in whole milk dairy products, cheese, butter and ice cream. It is also found in red meat, chicken skin and egg yolk. You have to either avoid these or find low fat alternatives.

    High Density Lipoproteins:

These combat the LDL and save us from coronary heart disease. Nuts, whole grains, vegetables and fruits come under this category. They are source of healthy unsaturated fats which does not cause blockage of arteries and they also combat the presence of LDL. Include a lot of fibers in your diet.

    Check Meat Options:

Red meat is high in saturated fats. Replace it with lean meal options like turkey and fish. Do not opt for ground beef. Do not fry your meat. Go for options like grilling and baking. Eat egg without the yolk.

Fulfill Requirements from Vegetables and Fruits:

Include more vegetables, fruits, whole grains and fibers in your diet so that you do not lag behind on the nutrition side. Try to take the maximum benefit out of them by eating them fresh or baking/grilling. Avoid frying because it will reduce the health benefits. Cut on the desserts and eat fruit fresh. Go for cereals and pastas instead of processed grains.

  • 4

    Cut Alcohol and Nicotine:

Cut on the alcohol. It makes you over eat and reduces your metabolism. It also gifts your 'empty' calories that lead to weight gain. Reduce your alcohol portion, dilute it or end it altogether. In any case, a man should not exceed two glasses a day while a woman should limit herself to a glass daily.  Replace with fresh fruit juices, preferably without any sort of addition. Give up on the smoking. The nicotine in it does no good to your heart.

    Avoid Fats:

Fry your food in vegetable oil or olive. These oils are low in saturated fats. Make a diet plan where you should reduce the percentage of calories coming from fats to 25%. However within this 25%, the amount of calories from non saturated should not exceed 7%.

    Count the Calories:

Reduce the amount of calories you intake by reducing your portion. Stick to this plan. Decide your calorie requirements according to your gender, age and amount of physical work. The last thing you want to is to get fat and that too on your heart.
