Difference between Beagle and Basset Hound

Beagle and Basset are two of the most famous and sought after dog breeds when it comes to keeping pets. Both belong to the same hound family and are quite similar to each other in many ways.

If you don’t have much information on these dog breeds, you might get confused when you see both of them together. So, you need to study them in detail to find out what separates them from each other. First of all, you need to know the difference between their size and weight. The beagles are not really large in size and  are one of the smallest dog breeds in the world. They weigh only around 18 to 35 pounds and their size varies between 13 to 16 inches.

Compared to them, the bassets are larger in size, but cannot be considered huge. If you talk about an adult basset, it can weigh up to 20 to 35 kilograms, depending on its health.

A pertinent feature of the bassets is that they have got drooping ears. Their ears are longer than any other dog breed in the world and you can spot them easily once you are aware of this feature.

Interestingly, the beagles have got such facial expressions that they appear to be happy all the times. Due to this, they are quite popular amongst children. Compared to them, the bassets generally sad due to their drooling faces.

Although the bassets are larger in size, they have got shorter legs compared to the beagles. However, their body is quite solid and looks muscular. On the other hand, the bassets have relatively longer bodies. You can also see a clear difference between the waists of the beagles and the bassets. The latter of the two have got a wide waist.
