Difference between Belgian Malinois and Belgian Shepherd

Dogs are probably the most popular pets and are important to human beings in many ways. They can serve numerous purposes such as security, herding, hunting etc. Moreover, they are the most loyal creatures on earth, so it is good to have a couple of them in your house.

If you start searching the internet, you will come across quite a few dog breeds. Some of them will be visibly similar, but will have differences in their temperament and overall behaviour.

On the other hand, there will be a few breeds, which will look the opposite when it comes to physical appearance. However, their temperament or personality will almost be the same. Therefore, you should do a thorough analysis of the kind of dog you are searching and then make a final decision.

Two dog breeds, which originated from the same region are the Belgium Shepherd and the Belgian Malinois. Although both breeds have a lot of similarities, they cannot fall under the same category. If you look at their history, you will be able to find some clear disparities.

First of all, the Shepherd is an original breed whereas the Malinois is a variety of the original breed. Therefore, there is a slight difference in the physical appearance between the two.

One very good feature of the Malinois is that they are quite active compared to any other variety of Shepherds. Therefore, they are popular amongst children and can play throughout the day without getting tired. They are rated as one of the most energetic dog breeds in the world.

Some of the Belgian Shepherd varieties can be found in solid black colour whereas this shade is not found in the Malinois. They can often be seen in a black mask, which is not a feature in other varieties.

The Malinois has a short coat whereas the Belgian Shepherd can be found with both short and long coats.
