Difference Between Titanium and Stainless Steel

Stainless steel has numerous uses all over the world just because of its incredible durability, tensile strength and resistance to corrosion. In fact, this alloy has immensely replaced iron in a number of segments. Cutlery, utensils, automotive parts, decorative ornaments, jewellery, stainless steel is equally suitable for making strong and durable items. However, titanium is another metal which possess quite similar properties of stainless steel. Both titanium and stainless steel are excellent materials for a wide range of products, from watches to kitchen appliances, for the users who are interested in sleek look for everything they have in their house.

Stainless steel is an alloy of iron, with certain amounts of chromium and nickel in it. The non-corrosive properties of chromium and nickel make stainless steel rust free and durable. However, stainless steel is not completely stain-proof. It is majorly used in utensils, home appliances, automobiles and even in building construction.

Although very light in weight, titanium is a strong metal and its use has been ever increasing in the past 10 years. This silvery metal is resistant to corrosion and is as strong as stainless steel. However, its weight is almost half of stainless steel, making it most suitable for using in space crafts, missiles and wrist watches.

    Stainless Steel

    No doubt stainless steel possesses immense tensile strength and corrosion resistant but its lower prices give it a great edge over titanium. Still, stainless steel appliances are more expensive than titanium ones. It is quite heavier than titanium and this makes it last longer before it needs any replacement. However, stainless steel is not hypoallergenic and it might cause infections to those people who have allergic skin and wear steel jewellery.

    Titanium

    If you desire to have appliances with shiny metallic look but extremely light in weight, titanium products is the best option. Having almost the similar tensile strength and toughness, titanium is more expensive than stainless steel. Titanium watches are far expensive than steel wrist watches and are more prone to scratches as well. However, unlike stainless steel appliances, titanium appliances are relatively cheaper. Moreover, titanium appliances show fewer fingerprint smudges than stainless steel objects but it also has been noticed that titanium products suffer the problem of their surface being chipped over time.
