House of Lords Outreach Programme

The House of Lords is an important institution of UK’s democratic system. Its makes laws by considering each bill, examining public policy matters and questioning government’s measures over various matters. Since the House of Lords acts for and on behalf of people, therefore it is of utmost importance to communicate and engage with the public. The public of United Kingdom shows great faith on members of the House and expects them to engage the public on current issues and update them with the progress. This interaction is completed with the help of different mediums or outreach programmes. Various modes of communication are used which include events held in the House, school visits and online blogs.

    Peers in Schools

    Schools are visited by a member of the House of Lords after he receives an application for it. The members explains House of Lord's role and answers questions regarding their performance while sharing their experiences of working in the House. This not only creates awareness amongst students but also triggers in them an aspiration to become a member of the House themselves by excelling in their studies and prospering in their future careers.

    House of Lords Chamber Events

    Once a year the House of Lords is open for public with young people participating and debating on several issues of national significance. These events help a great deal in engaging the youngsters in national issues and public policy affairs.

    The information wing of the House oversees online and other social media content to keep the public well-informed. This mode of outreach is beneficial in accessing the masses of United Kingdom.

    The twitter channel of the house is– @UKHouseofLords. It is another fast and easy way to communicate and engage with public. The tweets released by the House of Lords are followed  by many people and are considered an effective channel in reaching out to the public.

    House of Lords supports a blog Lords of the Blog which is administered by the Hansard Society. The Lords write blogs on various topics and about their standpoint on issues of national significance and keep the public aware of present state of affairs.
