How to be an Art Photography Major

Many people keep photography as a simple hobby or something to do in their spare time. Not many people are able to advance to the level of being an art photography major because it can become very detailed or advanced.

Only those serious about photography should think about getting a formal education in the subject as it will give you a professional skill set and some credibility.

    Choose Your Field

    Photography is a vast field with many specialisations, which many people do not realise. There is simple photography, followed by commercial and industrial photography. History and photojournalism fields are also widely available and quite trendy nowadays. Portrait photography is also becoming very popular and is in relatively high demand.

    Find a School

    There are some very limited names that offer art photography as a major and you should try and join the most well known one. Do some research to find out which schools offer these programs, their requirements and how you can work towards fulfilling them. There are a number of websites that offer information about various colleges and universities around the world. Be sure to search for educational institutions that offer a number of specialisations and majors in different fields.  So do not hesitate and begin your search today!

    Select the Degree

    One single degree does not exist when studying art or many other fields. There are numerous degrees that one can work towards in art and the entry-level one is usually known as the Associate of Arts, which will get you in as a photographer for a newspaper and magazines or various studios. Next, is the Bachelor's of Arts, followed by a Masters in the field of Fine Arts. These are very high level courses that can take some time and a lot of money, so determine which one is right for you.

    Talk to Others


    Counsellors are always available on college campuses to guide you. So make sure you discuss what you want to do and what your expectations are so that they can help you further. You can also talk to students of art photography to get a better understanding of the coursework and concepts that are needed. If you have any family or friends that have recently studied photography, you can ask them for more information.
