How to Become an ER Doctor

An ER (emergency doctor) is one of the most important people in the hospital as he/she gives the initial treatments to the patients who arrive in the emergency and are often in critical conditions. The ER physician diagnoses the patients’ diseases by assessing the symptoms and then recommends certain prescription.

It is not very easy to become an ER doctor as you have to study a lot. Furthermore, you need to have good interpersonal skills. Besides, you must be eager to take care of the patients regardless of your other commitments.

    Complete high school

    First of all, you have to complete your high school education. You must study science subjects during your school. Furthermore, try to work hard in biology, english, physics and chemistry. It will surely provide you a great competitive advantage in your field of interest. You must score good grades in your high school so as to get admission in renowned medical college.

    Attend medical college

    After completing your high school, take admission in a medical college and complete your undergraduate programme of at least three years.

    Earn practical experience in medical field

    You will receive several opportunities to volunteer your time during your undergraduate programme. So, try to learn as much as you can during your volunteer work in hospitals, clinics and nursing rooms. Moreover, try to develop good relationship with the doctors, nurses and other staff members of the hospital. In this way, you will be able to develop a good professional network which will surely help you in the future.

    Appear in MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test)

    In order to get admission for a graduate programme in a medical school, you will have to appear in MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test). Try to score good marks in the test to get admission in good medical school.

    Complete your graduation

    You will have to study for around 4 years to complete your medical school education. The first two years of your programme will include basic course study while in the next two years, you will gain practical experience.

    Finish your residency programme

    To become ER doctor, you will have to complete your residency programme of three to four years.

    Register in a fellowship

    After completing your residency programme, enrol yourself in a fellowship of one to two years.

    Pass USMLE and/or COMLEX

    Pass the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) and/or the COMLEX (Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination) and apply in a hospital as an ER doctor.
