How to Change the Sand in Your Pool Filter

A few pool filters use sand in order to keep the water free from debris as much as they can. With time, the sand will break down and you will have to eventually replace it. This task can be offered to a professional pool service company or the owner can do this job. Changing the sand in your pool filter is not difficult if you have some common tools and follow these simple techniques.

Things Required:

– Screwdrivers or pliers
– Shop vacuum
– Duct tape, water and filter sand
– Small bucket or hand scoop

Instructions

    Switch off the filter

Turn off the power to the filter at the breaker box as you want to be safe from any electrical discharge and reduce the possibility of getting a nasty shock.  Shut all plumbing valves that connect to the filter. Remove all the hoses that lead to your pool filter and put these hoses in the pool or else you will probably lose pool water. Use pliers or a screwdriver to get rid of the drain plug on the bottom panel of the filter. Allow the water to run out and fully clear the filter tank. After that, find the dial valve which is being help by a bad clamp and raise it up to remove it to the other side.

    Get rid of the sand

Clear the large amounts of sand with the small bucket or hand scoop. You will come across parts known as laterals at the bottom of the filter. Try not to disturb these as they might break. Take the help of a shop vacuum to clear the remaining sand from near the laterals. Check the laterals to see if there is any damage and inspect their age. Replace them if they become brittle to avoid any possible breakage in the future.

    Further instructions

Safeguard the opening of the stand pipe in the centre of the filter body. You do not want sand re-entering the pipe while you are refilling the tank. Change the drain plug in the bottom of the filter. Put about 33 percent of fresh water in the tank and install new sand in the filter. Then add some more water and remove the tape and change the dial valve.
