How To Clean and Maintain a Body Piercing

Just like permanent tattoos, body piercing has become a form of self-expression over the years. Although body piercings can hurt but still it something that has become quite popular over a short period of time. In order to avoid bacterial infections, it is imperative that you keep your body piercings clean all the time. You have to understand that cleaning body piercings is a bit different than cleaning other body wounds.

Things Required:

– Sea salt
– Distilled water
– Sterilised container
– Paper towels
– Fragrance free liquid soap

    The first thing you need to do before cleaning or even touching the body piercings, make sure that your hands are clean. Wash them thoroughly and wear a pair of sterilised gloves if possible.

    Dissolve 1.4 tablespoon of sea salt in warm distilled water. If you have to use tap water, remember to boil it first to kill any bacteria. Store this solution in a sterilised container and leave it in the refrigerator for a couple of days. Use this solution to clean and properly maintain body piercings.

    Half-fill a cup with the saline solution you prepared. For body piercings on larger body, invert the cup with saline solution to create a vacuum. Leave the body piercings soaked in this warm saline water for about five minutes each day. For smaller body parts, dip cotton balls in the saline solution and clean the body piercings with these cotton balls.


    To dry the pierced area, use soft paper towels.

    To get rid of any salt residue left from the saline solution, rinse the body piercings with warm boiled water and pat dry using soft and clean paper towels.

    While showering, gently lather the body piercings with a fragrance free liquid soap. Remember not to rotate the jewellery in the process, just clean and sanitise the pierced area. While cleaning the pierced body area, do not apply too much pressure. Use soft hands.

    The bed in which you sleep may have lots of bacteria harboured in it. After you get your body pierced, remember to keep your bed clean. Change bed sheets and pillow covers daily if possible.

    If you want to take a bath, prefer a shower over bathing in a tub. If it is necessary to take bath in a tub, make sure that you wash and clean the tub properly before bathing in it. After you are finished bathing in a tub, rinse your piercings immediately.
