Trim the dreads in a way that you remove the dead ends entirely. Remember, you are saving every inch of your hair here. You will trim an inch or so of the dreadlock to ensure you save your hair, otherwise you will have to shave your hair to get rid of the dreads.
Fill the bathtub or your sink with hot water and soak the dreads for at least 30 minutes. Do not start unlocking the dreads yet. This is the time to wash off the wax and not comb out dreads.
Now, start applying shampoo to the dreads. Make sure you are working out your hair in small portions. You do not have to do it all at the same time. You need to melt the wax that is there in the dreads. Keep shampooing the dreads until they are soft and conditioned.
Once you have washed the dreads with shampoo, soak them in water filled with conditioner for at least 20 minutes.
While your dreads are in the water, try combing them out with your fingers or comb.
Work on a small area every time. Conditioner will make it easier to comb out the dreads. However, you still need to be very careful.
Once combed out, soak your hair in shampoo once again. Wash them off to remove any remaining wax.
Condition hair with a good quality conditioner and use a steel brush to comb your hair while conditioning.
