Connecting two monitors to a computer and setting them up as a continuous screen can prove to be really useful. You can have more space on your desktop, two screens for gaming or viewing widescreen movies and will also be able to multi-task conveniently. Setting up dual monitors does not involve a very complicated process and therefore anyone can do it with ease in no time.

The first thing that you need to do is to confirm that your graphics card is powerful enough to support two monitors. You can refer to its manual to confirm if a dual set-up is possible. Also check if it has two VGA or DVI ports. It does not matter if there is one VGA and one DVI ports, or if both the ports are VGA or DVI. VGA ports are usually blue, whereas DVI ports are usually white. You can connect two monitors in one slot by using a splitter as well, but that is not recommended.

After confirming that your graphics card can support a dual-monitor setup, turn your attention to the two monitors that you wish to connect with your computer. Check the backside of the monitors to determine the type of ports they have.

  • 3

Purchase the cables for connecting the monitors with the graphics card. If your monitors have a DVI port while your graphics card has two VGA ports, do not panic. You can use a converter cable to match the ports on the monitors with the ports on the graphics card.

  • 4

Power off your computer and unplug the power cords in order to completely curb the risk of getting an electric shock.

  • 5

Connect the two monitors to the corresponding ports on the graphics card using the cables that you purchased.

  • 6

Plug the cords back into the power source and power on your computer, along with the two monitors that you have connected with it.

  • 7

Once the computer starts, log in and right-click on the desktop to make the drop-down menu appear on the screen. Locate “Properties” in the menu and click it.

  • 8

Locate the “Settings” tab in “Properties” to make a screen with two boxes labelled 1 and 2 appear. These two boxes represent the two monitors connected to your computer.

  • 9

Select the monitor labelled 2 and check the box to extend your display to the second monitor.

  • 10

You will now get display on both the monitors. Think of both the monitors as one singe large screen.
