How to Convert a Bus into a Motor Home

If the house that you have rented does not fulfil your requirements but you don’t have enough money to buy or build the type of house that you always wanted, don’t worry, you might be able to have your very own ‘moving’ home if you have a bus available. Local scrap yards are littered with old and dusty school buses that no one wants to use. School buses are simply perfect for making a motor home as they are spacious, colourful and can withstand all extreme weather conditions.

Most school districts are not allowed to use buses once they become 20 years old even though they are maintained till their last breath. This means that you will be able to buy a bus from an auction. Now that you have bought your bus, it’s time to start making changes to it.

Instructions

  • 1

Add some colour to your bus other than the yellow colour. Try choosing a conservative or homely colour and make sure that the colours don’t give your motor home a hippie sort of look.

  • 2

Now that you have painted it in a presentable form, have two lengths of two by twelve bolted along the outside of the body so that they can stiffen the walls and provide protection to your paint job so that it doesn’t get affected wherever you go.

  • 3

You can anchor these bolts with extra long bolts from the inside in order to give you perfect protection.

  • 4

You have to properly add insulation to the bus just like any other house as it will serve sound-proofing.

  • 5

Now that all the protection has been done, it is time to take a look at how you are going to design your bus from the inside. Chalk out lines on the floor according to how you will place the furniture and make compartments.

  • 6

Hire local carpenters to do all the woodwork and if you are good at it, do the plumbing and electrical tasks yourself in order to save some money.

  • 7

If you cover the walls of the motor home with some wooden decoration, it will look really good.

  • 8

Make kitchen cabinets, fridge counters, add sinks and of course, have a separate compartment for the restroom.

  • 9

Making beds can be fun and if you are single and do the occasional one night stand, you can make a nice comfortable bed fixed in one of the compartments of the bus.

That’s it! you have made your very own motor home.
