Lazy eye, which is also known as amblyopia, is a natural disease, in which one eye is weaker as compared to the other one. Amblyopia however, is not a very serious defect because the stronger eye makes up for the lazy one. Once an individual gets used to amblyopia, his/her mind disregards the image provided by the weaker eye.
This disease is very common and you must get your children checked before 10 years of age. If it is not corrected till 10, the kid will have to live the whole life with one weak eye, which cannot be improved by any means, including glasses or laser therapy.
Visit an eye specialist
As soon as your child complains about unclear vision, you must take an appointment from an eye specialist or visit an eye hospital or clinic nearby. If lazy eye has been diagnosed, the doctor will prescribe glasses for the kid.
As mentioned above, the stronger eye compensates for the lazy eye, which is the reason why most children fail to realize or complain about the disease. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you get their eyesight examined, even if there is no evident cause for concern.
Make the child wear the glasses
The glasses, prescribed by the doctor, should be used by the child all the time. Glasses are likely to strengthen the lazy eye.
Use a patch
In order to get the vision clearer, you have to help work the lazy eye through different means. You can put a patch on the stronger eye for about 3 hours a day, which will make the weaker eye work hard. This is an extremely useful practice and can strengthen the lazy eye. While the kid is having a patch on his stronger eye, you should ask him/her to read something slowly. The harder you make the lazy eye practice, the greater chance of improvement you have.
Atropine drops can be very useful in improving the vision of the child. These drops have some side effects and you must go through them before using the atropine drops. It is highly advised that you consult your eye-specialist before using these.
