To begin, take time out to get into the frame of mind for organising and de-cluttering your space. Then, proceed to start by getting rid of old, useless things. While it might seem like everything in the workspace is important, there are bound to be a lot of things that you really don’t need anymore. Do not keep things on the chance that you might need them in the distant future – if you do not need it, throw it out. Keep a wastebasket nearby as you go through old documents and files. Do away with old unnecessary paperwork, old office supplies, and any other items you don’t need, like old gifts and things like extra cups and paperweights. Only keep the things that you use, and enjoy.

Once all the extra junk has been disposed of, and you have pruned your belongings, it is time to organise it all. Don’t just dump everything you decide to keep back into boxes and closets – organise these so you know where everything is, and so you can easily locate it. Set up a filing system for files, business cards, bills, receipts, and other important documents. Label things, and sort them out in any way that works for you – e.g. alphabetical, chronological, and so on.

Next, focus on storing all the documents and items in a presentable manner. Don’t jumble them all into piles all over the room. Instead, get office and supply items like shelves, cabinets, and folders in which you can keep your things. While these might seem like an unnecessary expense at first, having the room in order is bound to save you a good deal of trouble and possibly even money, so consider it a wise investment. Once you have stored all your things, arrange everything so it is all harmonious and flowing, and so smooth and easy movement in the room is not obstructed in any way.

Now that everything has been organised and stored neatly, you will need to come up with a system for keeping it that way. A traditional but effective way to do this is to keep “In” and “Out” boxes on your desk. Do not allow anyone to toss things on to your desk and clutter it. Instead, place things in the In or Out boxes, and go through them systematically – this will go a long way in preventing clutter, and helping you stay organised.

Finally, invest in objects that will make the room appear beautiful and pleasing. Just because it is an office room does not mean it needs to be decked out in dull shades of beige or grey – that having been said, it is inadvisable to decorate in shades of hot pink or lime green. Opt for fresh, pleasing decor, perhaps light yellow or lavender in colour, as this will give the room a breezy, airy feel. Do not over-decorate - buy a few small but visually appealing paintings to decorate the walls, and place one or two decorative vases and lamps about the place. All this will do away with any confusion, clutter, or negativity, and positive energy will flow smoothly through your workspace and mind.
