How to Get a Two Year Old to Stop Hitting

“What an undisciplined child!” can often be heard in school and sometimes on the streets when a kid starts to yell, scream or hit.

In the process of educating their children, parents instil the necessary skills, courtesy and etiquettes after telling them the difference between good and bad. However, they usually do not stop their children despite seeing them hit others which may encourage kids to retain this bad habit.

Often babies, less than two years old, hit mom or dad in order to grab their attention. At this age, the kids feel normal to hit or bite someone. Sometimes, the situation becomes embarrassing especially when you are at a public place.

It is important that adults teach their kids to be more disciplined rather than encouraging them to hit others at an early age. There are several simple but effective ways to stop your two year old from hitting.

A two year old most often fights when they defend their right to have a toy. Children under two years get jealous after seeing a toy in the hands of another person. Therefore, in this case, you must demonstrate to your child how they should act in front of others to avoid any embarrassment.

The main mistake many parents make is that they are ready to do whatever the kid wants irrespective of the fact that they are right or wrong. You should warn your child about demanding things that are not good for them.

Tell your baby that they can seek attention with the help of effective communication as soon as they learn to talk. Show them that there are other ways to interact with people rather than hitting them.

The root cause behind your child’s poor discipline could be internal stress. This usually happens at an early age due to loneliness. If you only have one child then there is a good chance you will see aggressive behaviour from your kid.

Punishment is the last resort to stop your child from hitting others. It is one of the few methods to correct your child's behaviour without yelling and aggression. For example, you can punish your child by taking all their toys away from them.
