How to Get Caller IDs for Anonymous Numbers on Android

Despite telecommunication systems offering Caller IDs by default now, there are ways people can hide their true identity while calling you. Prank calls can be annoying at best, but threatening or harassing calls can be very upsetting. The fact that cellular connections (in some countries) are fairly easy to obtain, does not help much either. However, if you happen to own an Android smart-phone, you can use apps, easily available on the Google Play Store, to identify anonymous callers.

These apps work using crowd sourcing, which means the more users an app has, the more data it has collected. The basic principle of these apps is to collect contact data from users (if they allow) and create a global database. This database will have contacts from around the world, shared by users, and if any user gets a call from an unknown number, the app (using internet connectivity) will check through the database and come up with any information available on that number. This way, even if you don’t know your caller and don’t have any contact data on him/her, you can still find out who is calling you.

Instructions

  • 1

Ensure your Android device has internet connectivity and then run the Google Play Store app from the home screen or the app drawer.

  • 2

Using the Play Store’s search feature, look for an app called ‘Truecaller’. This is a free app and you need to install it to proceed further.

  • 3

Once installed, run the Truecaller app. The first screen will require you to select your country and tap next.

  • 4

On the next screen, the app will ask you to connect to social networks like Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin in order to get additional contact details.

  • 5

After connecting to your social networks, you will be presented with the ‘auto match’ option, enabling which will match your phone contacts automatically with your social network contacts.

  • 6

The free caller ID reveal feature is what you are looking for. However, in order to avail that, you need to agree to sharing your own contact data with others first. No one will be able to browse through your contacts, but people will be notified if they get a call from someone on your list.

Now if you get a call from an unknown number, the TrueCaller app will check for that number in its database and provide you a name and other information to go with it. This way you will know who you are talking to.
