People might tell you that anti-dandruff shampoos are mere marketing stunts, but that’s not always the case. There are several shampoos which are known to reduce dandruff, but the down side is that their effects wear off as soon as you skip them for a shower or two.
You should ideally wash your hair twice a week using lukewarm water and an anti-dandruff shampoo. Afterwards, you should dry your hair before brushing them lightly to remove any leftover flakes.
Following this your hair should remain dandruff free for at least 2 days.
Dandruff is basically dry and dead skin flakes which come off your scalp. Given this, it makes sense to keep your scalp well moisturized and prevent it from drying up or flaking.
You can use moisturizing hair conditioners for this purpose, or try the leave-in variety of conditioners readily available in the market.
If you can prevent your scalp from drying up, you will effectively prevent the formation of dandruff.

Hair Massages Work Wonders
Hair or scalp massages are great for promoting blood circulation, stimulating your roots and relieving mental stress. If you can’t get one, simply use natural oils like coconut, almond and olive oils, and firmly rub them into your scalp with your own fingers.
Vinegar is particularly effective against dandruff, and you can simply mix an equal amount of vinegar with water to wash your hair and get rid of any existing dandruff. However, this will not solve your problem permanently unless you work on the steps given above.
Neem leaves are widely used in Asia to treat scalp irritation, lice and dandruff. These leaves naturally have anti-septic qualities, and can moisturize your hair and scalp.
Once you get these leaves, crush them together in a bowl to create a paste and then add water to make the paste slightly runny. Now apply this paste onto your hair and scalp before washing it off with warm water.
Repeat this at least four times a week for best results.
An alternate way is to place neem leaves in boiling water for about half an hour and then strain the water to wash your hair with it.
Lemon is a natural cleanser of sorts, removing dandruff, excess oils and dirt from your scalp. You can simply take two lemons, squeeze them to extract their juice, add two parts of water to one part lemon juice and apply it on your scalp.
You can wash your scalp with shampoo after about 5 minutes to see a clean, dandruff free scalp.
Coconut oil and lemon juice mixture can also work wonders for your hair and scalp. Just mix 1 tablespoon lemon juice and 4 tablespoons of coconut oil in a bowl and then apply the mixture on your hair with the help of your fingers.
Once your whole head is covered, leave the mixture on for about 30 minutes before washing it off with shampoo and warm water.
Honey and lemon shampoo can also be created at home to get rid of dandruff. You will need to take 5 tablespoons of honey and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice in a bowl and mix them well before using the mixture to thoroughly wash your hair.
Both egg and natural yogurt have nutrients essential for a healthy scalp and hair. Since you might be lacking these nutrients in your diet, you can use a mixture of egg white and natural yogurt to make up for them.
Mix 1 egg white with 2 cups of yogurt and apply the paste thoroughly onto your hair and scalp. Keep it on for at least 15 minutes before washing your hair with cold water, and you will notice the difference.
Aloe Vera has several natural qualities which are beneficial for your hair and scalp. It not only soothes your skin but also has anti-bacterial properties vital for fighting off fungal infections. Just rub Aloe Vera gel on your palms and then massage your hair and scalp with it. Let it stay for about half an hour before washing for best results.
Like honey and lemon, apple juice and honey is also a good remedy for dandruff. Just take two tablespoons of apple juice and mix it with 5 tablespoons of honey to create a paste. Rub it onto your hair and scalp and let it sit for about 10 minutes before washing it.
-Stick to one shampoo which suits you and don’t wash your hair more than three times a week. Ideally, you should only shampoo your hair twice, but if that isn’t enough, you can look into dry shampoos.
-Massage your scalp with natural oils at least thrice a month to keep your scalp moisturized.
-Avoid using hair gels and products with chemicals and opt instead for light hair oils.
-If you are a swimmer, wear a bathing cap before entering the pool to protect your hair and scalp from chlorine.
