Parkinson’s disease is one of the biggest perils of old age. It is a progressive neurological disorder, which affects the voluntary and involuntary movements of the patients, and to an extent, renders him/her completely dependent on others. That is perhaps the biggest challenge which comes along with Parkinson’s.

In other diseases, it is just the matter of the amount of physical pain and agony that an individual has to sustain, but Parkinson’s disease not only erodes a person physically, it also destroys the mental peace and self reliance. In this scenario, the patient has only got his/her loved ones to bank upon. Although very demanding and at times frustrating, this can be done.

    Urge the patient to keep on trying

    Shaking of the hands is one of the most prominent effects of this disease, and it virtually renders the patient helpless in small daily chores like wearing clothes, cooking, tying the laces of shoes and so on. While it is very easy for a loved one to take charge and manage these problems on behalf of the patient, the ideal thing will be to exhort him/her to keep on trying. You can still help in bits and pieces, but by letting the patient do most of the work; you will ensure that his self esteem remains intact.

    Ensure that medicine are administered properly

    Although there is no permanent cure to Parkinson’s disease, there are medicines which can lessen the suffering. Given that the patient might already be under depression because of the disease, it is important for you to look after this aspect personally. It is also important to note the effect of the dosage. Some of these medicine have an over bearing effect on the patient and can virtually put them on bed. Be sure to apprise the doctor of the effects of these drugs.

    Ensure that there is an emotional outlet for the patient

    Parkinson’s disease can be the cause of mood swings and emotional bursts. A person suffering from this disease requires emotional help and somebody who can listen to him/her. Make sure that you are one who does that. Ensure that there is a complete social circle around the person, and adhere to even the smallest needs. Taking out the person for physical exercise might also be a very good idea, given that his/her physical condition allows that.
