How to Install a Computer Graphics Card

So you are not happy with your computer’s current graphics card? Want to go the extra mile and get a better video card? No worries. You can do this in a couple of minutes. Once you have the graphic card, you would not have to pay a technician to do the job. You can perform it yourself only if you know how to go by it. Installing a computer graphics card is easy. While most of us think it is rocket science, it is down to basics. In just a few simple steps, you will be able to successfully install the graphics card in your computer.

    First of all, shut down the computer and wait for it to cool down. Make sure you leave the computer plugged into the surged suppressor.

    Now, start disconnecting all peripherals from the computer. Make sure no peripheral is connected before you start the operation.

    Next, start removing the cover of chassis. You will need to keep all the screws and bolts with you. Also, remember the location of each screw.

    If necessary, remove the computer’s back panel.

    Now, locate the video card of your computer through its user manual. Remove the old video card when located.

    You have to know whether you are modifying from a PCI card to an ISA card. If so, locate a PCI slot.

    Once you have located the PCI slot, unscrew the metal plate on it.

    Now, insert the new graphic card into the slot. Make sure you are not touching any connectors on the card, as this could damage the connectors. If necessary, push it a bit but do not go too harsh.

    Replace the back panel of the computer and the removed screws. Also, position the video card into the slot holder via the screw holes.

    Reconnect all the peripherals, the monitor, keyboard and mouse, and reboot your computer.

    At this stage, if your monitor is displaying that means the card is fixed well.

    You will now get onscreen instructions for installing the driver. Follow them precisely. If Windows does not automatically give you the prompt, you can go to the ‘Add New Hardware’ option through the Control Panel to add the driver.
