A possible way to add to the beauty of a dark room is by using ivy topiary. A good thing about ivy topiaries is that you can use them at any time of the year and decorate them as desired. To get a springtime feel, you can decorate ivy topiary with fresh flowers.

Making ivy topiaries at home is a fairly simple task and would not take too much of your time.

Things Required:

– Pot
– Ivy
– Topiary frame
– Potting soil
– Sphagnum moss
– Fishing line
– Twist ties
– Bucket
– Water

Instructions

  • 1

Decide the size and shape of the ivy topiary you are planning to make and purchase a topiary frame accordingly. Visit a local hardware store or a garden centre to purchase the topiary frame. Alternately, you can make your own topiary frame by reshaping a wire coat hanger.

  • 2

Decide which ivy you would want to use for the topiary and fill a desired sized pot with potting soil and chosen ivy.

  • 3

Carefully insert the frame, you bought in the first step, into the soil with which you filled a pot in the second step. To ensure that the frame would stay in place, firmly pack the soil around it if required. If the frame is not firmly rooted in the soil, the increasing weight of growing ivy would make the frame to topple over.

  • 4

Half fill a bucket with water and soak sphagnum moss in it. Leave the sphagnum moss soaked for about 10 to 15 minutes and then tightly wrap it around your topiary. You may have to use multiple twist ties or a long piece of fishing line to secure the sphagnum moss. In case the topiary you are using is in the shape of a ball, the best way to secure the moss is by inserting it inside the ball frames.

  • 5

Separate the ivy vines from each other and start wrapping one of the vines around the topiary frame. As before, hold each vine in place with twist ties or fishing line.

  • 6

Ivy vines will grow in length over a period of time. Wrap the newly grown ivy vine sections around the frame. With enough vine wrapped around the frame, both the frame and the moss will eventually disappear.
