How to Perform the Back Spot Movement

The back spot movement is a popular variation of the basic movement of samba dance. While not being exceedingly difficult, the back spot is considered a fancy move that takes some time to master.

While learning this move, you may struggle in the beginning and at times, it even becomes frustrating for some people. However, with a little patience and practice you will be performing the back spot movement with ease and can impress your dance partners with a new move.

    You first need to learn the basic samba step, as the back spot movement just requires you to add some fancy moves at appropriate intervals. If you do not know how to perform the basic samba step, consult with your dancing coach. You can also get help from your dancing partner or a video tutorial to get proficiency in samba.

    To begin the basic samba movement, usually you have to step forward after the first beat. When doing a back spot movement, you will have to alter your movement by not stepping forward. Instead, you will have to slide your left foot to the left side and shift your weight onto your left leg.

    After you shift your left leg to the side, back tap your right foot by moving it behind the left and tapping with the ball of your foot. Your left foot should rise a little and then lower once you have completed the tap. All these movement are nearly simaltaneous.

    If you are doing the Fifth Position, move to the right foot. Continue the movement as you would begin with the left foot but with all the motions switched.

    Continue to practice the back spot with different music, tempo and partners. Also, it is important for your progress to weave the back spot into more complex moves like progressive turns. This will improve your execution of the back spot and increase your samba skills.
