How to Take Screenshots Of Your Android Smartphone

While taking screenshots on your computer, you might have used to press PrintScreen (Windows) or Command+Shift+3 (Mac OS X), but that is not the case with an Android phone. It is not possible to directly take a screenshot of an Android phone or tablet by pressing a button.  Well, this might be a problematic situation for you, especially whenever you want to show your friends with proof of an online game victory, or save an unusual error message, or take an image of your blog post.

But don’t worry, there is a step by step guide through which you can easily take screenshots of an Android smartphone from your computer where the Android SDK is installed.

    Taking Screenshots

    First of all, you have to use a tool known as ddms tool (Dalvik Debug Monitor) which is located inside your Android directory. Now open a file explorer (Places > Home Folder)…

    Then go to the Android directory (amdrpod-sdk-linux_x86)…

    Afterwards, go to the tools subdirectory:

    You will easily locate the ddms tool inside the tools directory. Double-click it:

    By clicking on it, a dialogue will appear in which you will be asked “Do you want to run ddms”? Click on the Run in Terminal tab:

    You can also start ddms through this way. – Applications > Accessories > Terminal – and write the following command:

    ~/android-sdk-linux_x86/tools/ddms

    Now the Dalvik Debug Monitor has been started. On the top left window, you can see your Android device, let’s say SHOARL.

    Go to Device > Screen Capture…

    The Device Screen Capture window opens with the screenshot that is currently displayed on your Android phone or tablet. In case you want to change your current screenshot, you have to go to the area from where you want to get a screenshot on your Android phone. Now, click on the Refresh button in the Device Screen Capture window:

    Press the Save button if you want to save the selected screenshot. By pressing on it, the Save Image… dialogue will appear. Write a file name and select a folder in which you want to save your screenshot on your computer. It will then be saved as a .png file on your system.

    All done, you can now open the folder where you have saved the screen shot.
