How to Tie & Dye Jeans

If you have a raggedy pair of jeans hanging at the back of your closet, you should think about tie dying it in order to renew it fantastically. Tie dying is basically a very simple process in which only the selected areas of the fabric are exposed to your favorite color dye to get the desired trendy look.

If you are novice to tie dyeing, then it will be a fun project and a fashion statement for you. Jeans made from denim fabric are best to tie and dye as they smoothly absorb the color.

Things you will need to tie and dye jeans:
– A pair of jeans – jeans can be anything like jacket, trouser etc
– Rubber bands
– Bleach
– Rubber gloves
– A bucket

Instructions

  • 1

First of all, fill up a medium plastic bucket with cold water and dip your jeans into it.

  • 2

Let your jeans sit in the water for a few minutes until thoroughly wet.

  • 3

Drain the jeans and squeeze it properly in order to remove the excess water.

  • 4

Now, grab rubber bands and tie them to the jeans. These can be many as you want.

Note: There is no hard and fast rule in adding the rubber band to the jeans. Therefore, the more rubber bands you tie to your jeans, the darker patches you will have in the end.

  • 5

Fill the plastic bucket again with clean water and pour in half bottle of the good quality bleach. Stir it with a long stick to mix both of the liquors.

  • 6

Wear your rubber gloves and place the wet jeans into the water-bleach solution.

  • 7

Now, let the jeans sit in the water-bleach mixture for a few hours, checking frequently. If you want the tie dye parts light in color, then your time should not exceed 30 minutes. If you want dark tie dye, then soak the jeans for at least one hour.

Note: Place something heavy on the soaked jeans in order to keep it under the bleach water. You can use a clean brick for this purpose.

Once you are satisfied with the attained tie dye color of your jeans, rinse it in clean cold water. Place it in another bucket of plain water for around ½ hour and wash it as usual.

  • 9

Hang your tie dyed jeans to dry, avoiding too much sunlight.

  • 10

Enjoy the conversion of your old ragged jeans into a creative work of art.
