How to Tune an Archery Bow

Archery is a fascinating sport which requires the use of a bow and an arrow. Over time and with frequent use, a bow can fall out of alignment. Moreover, you may have to make a number of other adjustments to the bow such as tuning the arrow launcher, pressure button and brace height. Tuning an archery bow is an easy task if one knows the proper way to do it.

Things Required:

– Target
– Framed sheet of paper

Instructions

  • 1

Make sure that the string you choose complements your shooting style. The life of some bow string materials is longer than others whereas some materials are known for delivering speed.

  • 2

In a bow, distance between the grip and the string is known as the brace height. Determine the brace height of your bow. If your bow releases the arrow without making noise and keeping the amount of string vibration to a minimum, the brace height of your bow is ideal.

  • 3

Make adjustments to the brace height if required. The aim is to reach  minimum noise and vibration levels. This can be accomplished by first testing the bow at standard brace height. If you are not satisfied with the performance of the bow with standard brace height, tweak it by adding four or five twists to the bowstring. This will shorten the brace height. Test the bow once again. Continue until you find the optimum brace height.

  • 4

Make adjustments to the pressure button of the bow. If it is a compound bow you are tuning, the pressure button should be tuned to ‘full centre’ position. On the other hand, pressure buttons for all other bow types should be tuned to ‘outside centre’ position.

  • 5

Make adjustments to the launching spring of the bow in order to tune the arrow launcher. This will ensure that full weight of the arrow rests on the arrow launcher.

  • 6

Each tuning adjustment you make should be tested using the paper arrow test. For instance, alignment of the bow can be tested by setting up a framed sheet of paper. Make sure that the sheet of paper you setup is in level with a target which you can shoot. The bow would be properly aligned only if the arrow and the target point are in proper alignment with each other.
