How to Use Essential Oils for Sprains

Sprains are common while performing your routine work and they can really hurt. Having pain killer medicines for sprains isn’t a better solution, as these medicines might have other side effects on your stomach. Ointments and creams for external use are considered to be a better option to cure the sprains you have suffered. However, you can move a step further by making your own massage oil to drive away the pains. Essential oils have tremendous properties to provide healing effects to your skin and make you feel relaxed by their aroma.

    The key step in the entire process is to obtain pure essential oils, as many oils in the market only have the scent of the essential oils and they are in fact not pure oils. Pure essential oils are relatively expensive to purchase. You can also order them online or purchase them from a reliable health store. You will see a label written ‘100 percent pure’ on those essential oils, guaranteeing their purity. Remember that synthetic oils will not give you the desired benefits.

    Buy some sesame or almond oil specifically made for massage purpose from the health food stores or order online. These specific oils are particularly manufactured and refined for using on the skin.

    The choice of essential oils depends upon your sense of smell and likeness you have. Many stores have tester bottles of essential oils and you have check out the scents, determining which one gives you a soothing feeling.

    For essential oils to be used for sprains, there are several combinations of oils, called ‘formulas’. Each formula has warming oils, which create the heating sensation during massage. The two common formulas are:

    Formula no. 1: Celery, Lemongrass, Spearmint and Eucalyptus
    Formula no. 2: Chamomile, Peppermint and Cypress

    Mix the ingredients of Formula no. 1 and add sesame or almond oil to it. You have to add 15 ml of sesame or almond oil (known as ‘carrier oil’) in a plastic bottle, then add 5 drops of Celery, 5 drops Lemongrass, 3 drops of Spearmint and 2 drops of Eucalyptus essential oils to it. Shake the bottle well.

    For Formula no. 2, add 15ml of carrier oil in a plastic bottle and add 5 drops Chamomile, 5 drops of Peppermint and 5 drops of Cypress essential oils into it. Shake the ingredients very well.

    Use ½ to 1 teaspoon of the essential oils mixture to massage on the sprained area of your body and you will feel the pain fading away instantly.
