How to Choose a Good Horror Movie

Horror movies can be great entertainment, especially when you have a group of friends spending the night at your house. However, choosing a good horror movie can become quite frustrating, since the bad ones feature really bad effects and a lame story. If you want your horror movie night to be perfect, make sure you do a bit of research before you go buy or rent a DVD.

The first thing you need to do is to ask yourself just how scary you want the movie to be. You probably already know that some horror movies can be really scary, leaving the fear planted in your head for hours even after you have stopped the film. You do not want to select a movie that will make you turn off the TV half-way through, or a film that you can only watch in the company of others and with the light switched on.

After you have decided just how scary you want the horror movie you select to be, switch on your computer and use your Internet browser to visit IMDB.com, which is the biggest movie database on the internet. It offers the complete information about films, the cast, synopsis, reviews, bloopers, etc. Simply go to the horror section and start going through the list.

Go through the synopsis of the movie to get an idea of what the movie is about. Even though you are searching for a horror movie, remember to never make a compromise on the story, as a weak story can make the experience extremely bland.

  • 4

Go through the reviews of the horror movies to get a better idea of how scary and interesting a film is. Be sure to go through both the positive and negative reviews so that you know what other people liked and hated about the film. Avoid reviews that contain spoilers.

After you short-list a few horror movies, look at the age rating and go through the parental guidance. The age rating will be typically high for the movies that feature plenty of gore and frightening scenes. Rating is also affected by language and sexual reference, both of which you would want to avoid if you planning on watching the movie with your family around. Horror movies generally have a very high rating because of containing all three things, i.e. gore, sexual reference and language. Select a horror movie with an age rating that you fall under.
