Letter to Leave Church

If you plan on leaving your church, you must make sure that you leave on good terms. In most cases, you will be required to submit a letter to the church, formally announcing your departure. This is important because most congregations do not have written regulations that govern membership. Moreover, the letter should be courteous and state clearly that you want to disassociate from the church. This is necessary for the leadership of the congregation to issue you a letter of transfer or a certificate of standing.

Let us now show you how to write a letter to leave church, and if you want, you can also use the samples and template we have provided below to draft your own letter.

    Dear Pastor,

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to you today to inform you of my departure from your congregation. I will be moving to California with my family because I have accepted a new job in the state.

I have grown a lot spiritually during my last 10 years with the church. Your leadership and sermons have always inspired me and helped me become a better person. Moreover, I have made really good friends at the church and will miss them all. Sunday, October 5th will be my last day as a member and It will be a very sad day for me.

I would appreciate if you could recommend any church in my new location. Furthermore, it would be my honor if you could give me a letter confirming my attendance at this church.

    Church Leaving Letter Sample #2

    To:
    Father Vincent Nichols
    Saint Mary Church
    Philadelphia, PA

    From:
    Gerard Guetta
    123 Big City ave
    Big City, USA

    Date: December 1, 2000

    Dear Father,

I have decided to conclude my relationship with Saint Mary’s church and will be moving to Saint Nicholas church in downtown. I will not be attending any more sermons with the congregation starting from December 2.

I have had a lot of positive experiences over the 5 years I have spent as a part of your flock. It has been great taking part in humanitarian and Christian activities. However, I have been sourly disappointed with the direction this church and its leaders are taking for the last few months. I do not think that I can be part of a church when I don't agree with its teachings.

I would like you to issue me a letter that states my membership at this church to date so that I can send it to the leaders at my newly chosen church.

    Thanking you,
