Vanilla is a flavour that everyone from babies to adults enjoy. It can go with so many different things that you may actually be surprised. You will be surprised to know that it is not just an ingredient reserved for desserts.
Vanilla Salad Cream
Vanilla salad cream is actually a tasty treat that goes well with a whole range of main courses. Made just like normal salad cream (with English mustard, egg, milk, vinegar) and vanilla pod seeds. This sauce is great to impress dinner party guests with and goes especially well with poached sea trout.

Vanilla French Toast
A sweet breakfast treat that is a great alternative to your average slice of toast. Simply beat eggs, milk, sugar vanilla and salt in a bowl before covering your bread in it. Fry like you would normal French toast and then serve with syrup or cinnamon sugar.

Chutney is a British favourite and goes well with everything. Serve it on a cheese board or with some mini pork pies for a truly delicious snack. Again you use the seeds of a vanilla pod in this recipe, like with most of the top ten recipes so far. These can be expensive so you can just use vanilla flavouring if you want a cheaper alternative.

Love it or hate it, egg nog is a truly festive treat. Make an alcoholic version with brandy, or make a child friendly version using eggs, milk, caster sugar, cherries and vanilla. You can make up a whole batch and keep it in the fridge to serve throughout Christmas (or any time of the year really)!

Homemade Ice Cream
Homemade vanilla ice cream is a real treat and can be served with another dessert or on its own. You may find that using an ice cream maker will be an easier way of completing this recipe, but it is not completely necessary.

Vanilla and Fish
For some reason, vanilla seems to go incredibly well with all types of fish. You may have already tried the salad cream that goes with poached trout but there are plenty of other fish to consider using with vanilla too. Crab, prawns, salmon, haddock and lobster all seem to make the top of the chef's lists.

Gingerbread Pancakes with Parma Ham
A nice mix of sweet and savoury that makes for a very posh breakfast indeed. The gingerbread pancakes are made using cinnamon and ground ginger, along with some vanilla for added flavour. Then simply grill your parma ham until it is crispy and serve with maple syrup. Yum!

Another alcoholic beverage that goes extremely well with vanilla is the Princess Martini. In this case however you use vanilla flavoured vodka with some vanilla sugar, mixed with passion fruit purée, lemon juice and grapefruit juice for a perfectly pink and princess like cocktail. You can make vanilla sugar by placing an empty vanilla pod in your sugar jar and leaving for a few days.
